Delulu/Ground(ed)

I started with one figure and split it in two.

On one side: delulu is the part of us that dreams big, ignores inconvenient evidence, and occasionally mistakes wishful thinking for a solid plan. On the other: ground(ed) is the part that keeps its feet on the floor, acknowledges gravity, and, in this case, is literally standing next to an electrical outlet.

The figure stretches across both states but doesn't fit neatly into either one. Its colorful, wax string forms seem to pull in different directions, while the shadowed body on the right gives it weight and physical presence. The gap between the canvases separates the two sides, but the figure insists on being one thing anyway.

I’m interested in the uneasy, and sometimes useful, relationship between imagination and reality. Being completely grounded can make it difficult to leap. Being completely delulu can make the landing interesting.

Maybe the trick is not choosing one over the other.

Maybe we need just enough delusion to imagine a different future and just enough ground to plug ourselves back in.
