Egghead

Egghead began as a playful portrait of one of my signature wax figures. The title suggests intelligence, expertise, and certainty, but the painting ultimately became about something much more personal.

As I was working, my toddler pointed to the figure and added what he believed it was missing: a bright green circle for its butt. I laughed, loved the addition, and decided to keep it. What might have been a simple whimsical painting became a collaboration between parent and child, artist and observer.

The green shape disrupts the seriousness implied by the title. An “egghead” is supposed to be intellectual, thoughtful, and perhaps a little self-important. Yet here stands a figure with oversized blue eyes, a goofy smile, and a toddler-designed backside proudly incorporated into the final composition. The result is a reminder that creativity does not belong exclusively to trained artists, critics, or academics. Sometimes the most honest artistic decisions come from instinct, play, and the uninhibited imagination of a child
