I'm Mari Jae. I'm a classically trained oil painter who makes paintings about people, politics, absurdity, relationships and whatever else won't leave me alone.

Congress Print
What happens when play and conflict occupy the same space?
Congress began with two figures. Then came two words: “play” and “fight”. Finally, the title changed and suddenly the whole conversation shifted.
In this colorful contemporary art print, two expressive wax-string figures face one another amid a swirling, almost dreamlike landscape of bubbles and tangled forms. The word “play” appears scattered through the composition, while “fight” sits inside a bold pink speech bubble spoken by someone just outside the frame.
That detail matters. The fight isn't necessarily coming from the figures themselves. Someone or something has introduced it.
Titled Congress, the work becomes an allegory for the complicated space where people, ideas, agendas, and competing voices collide. It doesn't point a finger at one political party or offer a simple answer. Instead, it plays with the tension between cooperation and conflict, conversation and confrontation, and the things we bring into a room before anyone has even had a chance to speak.
And then there is the pink.
Against the greens, blues, and tangled wax figures, “fight” becomes impossible to miss. It is loud, playful, almost absurd yet somehow that makes it more pointed. The result is a contemporary political art print that uses humor and visual storytelling to explore a subject that is rarely simple.
Whimsical on the surface. A little more complicated underneath.
