(Not) Cloudy Print
Sometimes the biggest obstacle is the storm in your own head. (Not) Cloudy plays with the idea of rising above the things that cloud us (fear, confusion, jealousy, aggression, doubt) and finding the confidence to see things differently.
Two figures occupy the same colorful world, but they don't experience it in quite the same way. One appears bright, expressive, and ready to rise above it all. The other lurks in the shadows, tangled up in a much darker emotional landscape.
The title does some of the work, too. Not cloudy. Or maybe still a little cloudy. That's the fun.
Built from Mari Jae's signature wax-string figures and translated into a vibrant contemporary painting, the work turns an everyday expression into an allegory about perspective, perception, and the complicated things that can happen inside our own heads. It's whimsical. It's colorful. And underneath all those wax strings, it's about trying to find your way back to the light.
